Per the 1900 census Thomas H. Begnal and Margaret (Maggie in the 1880 census) E. Shevlin married about 1874.  Following is a theory that Margaret's mother Catharine Shevlin, housed boarders and Thomas Begnal was one, possibly how Thomas may have met Margaret Shevlin.  Or one of Catharine Shevlin's son's worked in Thomas's hardware store.

1875 - Catharine Shevlin, widow (Denis) home 22 Dallius,
Note: same address in 1873 for Thomas Beglin
